Yesterdays BBQ was a great success and only one sausage was lost to the fiery pit of oblivion (i.e. down the side of the grill!). As far as I know so far no one has gone down with food poisoning as a direct result of my cooking!

Now time for some tech news:
Yesterday saw the release of Mozilla Firefox 0.9 - the latest and greatest web browser. With it comes a host of new features include an extensions manager, a theme manager and a new visual theme to name but a few. To be honest I’m not sure about the new default theme but I think I’ll stick with it for a while and see if it grows on me. If you don’t like it you can always install the old one which to my mind is pretty qute (excuse the poor joke!). For a pretty good review of the new version check this out.
From what I’ve been hearing on the virtual grape-vine it sounds like a new release of my favorite Linux distribution is on its way. Slackware 10.0, as it will no doubt be called, is long overdue in my mind (the site hasn’t been updated since last September FGS) and if things continue as they have been it’ll knock the socks of everyone else - it just can’t be beaten for its speed, stability and rapid security update cycle. The last time the Norwich server was rebooted was when my Dad ‘accidentally’ turned off the UPS, aside from that its never crashed. Keep your eyes peeled for a release candidate some time very soon.

Having a loft room has a number or pros and cons - in winder its nice and warm but in summer its hotter than hell! Right now I’m experiencing the latter. Having got up this morning with the intention of completing a good part of my project feasibility study I have only managed to write about two pages of it. Its just to hot, even with all the windows open and the blinds down (around 28 deg C). I tried convincing my parents that air-conditioning up here would be a good idea but they weren’t having any of it especially considering I only spend about half the year at home now! I think I’ll have to do the work early in the morning and late evening from now on.
Tonight I’m in charge of the BBQ so people better be prepared from some flame-grilled sausages and some charcoal-flavored burgers! Food poisoning here I come

Sorry for the bad grammar in yesterdays post - my excuse is that I was very tired when I wrote it!
Its been just under two weeks now since I moved my blog over to the new site and I’ve already been astonished by the amount of linkage that has been generated just by switching to something standards based (RSS etc). The back-end system I was using before was OK but very limited compared to WordPress which seems to becoming the de-facto replacement for the venerable MovableType which has gone commercial. Although I’m still not 100% satisfied with the layout of the new site I still think its better than the old one and will probably continue to develop it as and when I have the chance / inspiration. Now all I need is some more traffic so as to get people commenting a bit more…
Talking of comments, yesterday evening out of nowhere some random person starts talking to me on MSN, the conversation runs like this:
(so)H(so): hu the f*** r u
beyondzero@hotmail.com: who is anyone?
(so)H(so): i duno u tell me
beyondzero@hotmail.com: i have no idea who u r
(so)H(so): me neither
(so)H(so): hu am i?
beyondzero@hotmail.com: at least we agree on that
(so)H(so): lol
beyondzero@hotmail.com: so is ‘H’ a cunning pseudonym? possibly like ‘M’ in James Bond?
(so)H(so): nah im ellie howards daughte
(so)H(so): r
beyondzero@hotmail.com: ahh, that explains so much…
(so)H(so): rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I question why the internet seems to be a hotbed of strange and twisted people, whoever this person was they sounded seriously confused! I think in future I’ll just ignore such people to avoid causing them more mental harm. On a side note, why do people seem to regress to apes when talking online? Is it really so difficult to talk properly?! Enough ranting for one day!

Today, to the very day, was my grandparents Golden Wedding anniversary (50 years no less!). To celebrate the occasion we had a big friends and family get-together at a local hotel type place just outside of where we live. It was one of those occasions where there are a lot of people there who knew you when you were about 5 years old but who you only have a very vague recollection of! We had a very nice lunch (see Figure 1) before retiring to their house for afternoon tea (how British - see Figure 2). Although there was some pretty heavy rain in the morning it brightened up considerably at lunchtime and was pleasantly hot all afternoon.

Fig. 1 - A rather exquisite cake, half eaten, served with cream - yum.

Fig. 2 - Lounging around in the back garden!
Everything went off without a hitch, except perhaps when one of the younger cousins nearly drove a pram into a pond! Pre-teenage drivers these days!

After a rather tortuous train journey home (you’ve heard it all when their excuse for the train being late is “sheep on the line”!) I’m now back in my comfortable, yet rather warm around this time of year, loft. Although I can cook perfectly well its nice to have a weekend of mums decent cooking for a change!
If you’re into the strange world of anime read-on, otherwise you might want to read-off… (I think I may have just invented a new insult there ;)). Today I thought I’d review a series I’ve just recently started watching: Kiddy Grade (yes I know the title has a bit of the WTF factor but bear with it, its not as dodgy as it sounds!).

Set in the future where several galaxy colonies exist, Kiddy Grade follows the inner workings of the Galactic Organization of Trade and Tariffs (GOTT). GOTT was formed to oversee universal economic imbalance, arbitrate disputes, and negotiate contracts and treaties between planets. Clients pay GOTT for various services ranging from scoping out illegal materials to escorting a high profile person or document to its designated location. On the job are 2 ES members, Eclair and Lumiere (note the French theme going on here), who stand ready and willing to do what’s necessary to complete their tasks.

Eclair is one of the most powerful cyborgs ever created, although her data has been erased and rewritten so many times, that she has an innocent, childlike presence to her. Lumiere is a hacker cyborg and can get into and control a number of systems through merely touching the control panel. Together, they follow the orders of GOTT Commander Eclipse as best as they can, although sometimes they get help from a variety of other GOTT members.

The animation is generally good although the quality reflects the relatively low per-episode budget. The general storyline, which runs throughout, starts of slowly but picks up in the second half. If you’re looking for something a bit stupid and lighthearted then it’s defiantly to be recommended - 7/10.
