Its been a busy couple of days over here in Italy - yesterday we visited Herculaneum and Vesuvius, today we walked up to an old monastery high up in the mountains and spent the afternoon on the beach.

Herculaneum was particularly impressive - it’s similar to Pompeii but was covered in molten lava rather than ash, hence much less of it has been uncovered.

Going up Vesuvius was also pretty good although it was a little more touristy that I liked and we couldn’t walk around the whole of the craters edge.

We’ve only got one full day left over here and the battery is running low on the Blackberry I’ve borrowed so this may be the last post. Make sure you check back on Sunday at the latest for loads of pictures and a little more explanation!

Yesterday we visited the ancient remains of Pompeii which was covered in ash when Vesuvius last had a major eruption. It was quite an amazing place and it almost felt like steeping back in time considering the huge scale of the site and how well preserved it was.

Today with took a bus to the local town of Positano and then from there we had a boat trip to Amalfi. Its quite incredible how houses are built around here clinging to the sides of very steep hills and stacked on top of one another - I’m pretty sure none of them would pass building regulations back in England!

I write this whilst sitting on our apartments terrace overlooking the sea - its really rather nice!

Made it to Italy in one piece, unfortunately we were held up in the airport for 3 hours waiting for the hire car but we made it eventually. One thing I have already noticed is that Italian drivers are all complete psychopaths with death wishes - driving along the coastal road was one of the most scary things I’ve done in a long time. Other than this the heat is incredible and our apartment is very nice with an amazing view out over the sea. Today we’re off to explore the local area - more news soon.
