Just noticed on the BBC News website that a poll carried out by BBC Worldwide has voted Fawlty Towers the best sitcom. Surprisingly many of the voters were German!!

“Don’t mention the war!”
Alongside other post-war classics like ‘Dad’s Army’ I would definitely rank it top of my list but I also feel a certain sense of sadness when watching the classic episodes today knowing that nothing like it could never me made again in our modern age of ridiculous political correctness. They just don’t make them like they used to - luckily 1984 hasn’t caught up with us just yet and we are still free to enjoy them!
As a side note I have sometimes been likened to Basil Fawlty in times of stress by certain members of my family but I can’t for the life of me work out why!

Are you ever stuck for words or in need of a way out of a tricky conversation? Not any more - the ‘Self-Annihilating Sentences‘ web list is the perfect get-out clause which will instantly put an end to any argumentative or stagnant discourse! Here are a few of my favorites:
“I feel a lot more like I do now than I did when I came in.
The future isn’t what it used to be.
If there’s anything I can’t stand, it’s intolerance.
A little pain never hurt anyone.
If he were alive today, he’d turn over in his grave.
When I want your opinion, I’ll tell you what to say.
Like everybody else, I’m different.
Only variables remain constant.
No one goes there anymore; it’s too crowded.
To distinguish the real from the unreal one must experience both.”
It’s good to see that the staff in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania spend their time well! Coincidentally the list is almost as old as I am so they’ve had a fair few years to work on it since then!

First day of lectures was fairly uneventful - started in the morning with ‘Program Slicing’ and ‘Human Computer Interaction’ followed by ‘Computer Graphics’ in the afternoon. Nothing much here to report other than the lecture rooms are as hot and stuffy as ever - not very conducive to productive thought! Tomorrow isn’t likely to be much more interesting either although I’ve got a careers interview in the afternoon, at which I hope to get my CV check out and try and work out a better sense of direction.

Take the red pill? Take the blue pill?
Noticed a cool article on Engadget today about tiny robotic capsules which have been designed by researchers in Italy and Korea (can you see the connection??!!) to be used in medical examinations after being swallowed! Their primary purpose appears to be for exploring the intestines prior to surgery. I seem to remember some corny sci-fi film many years ago about people being shrunk and injected into a person for the same purpose - the thought of little ‘things’ crawling around inside isn’t really appealing - what happens if they get stuck!

Quite an impressive sunrise this morning visible from my new room:

Complete with prison in foreground!

Moved into my new room in college today. It’s a pretty good room with a nice view out over the back down to the river - take a look inside here!

Notice the Italy photos on the wall!
