Crash Test

Crash Tests

I’m not wanting to alarm/upset anyone with above pictures but I came across this site (via Future Feeder) which contains a selection of vehicle crash test videos conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US. Whilst seeing this sort of thing is nothing new it sort of brings it home just how violent a collision can be. Luckily car safety is improving but psychological studies have shown that the safer people feel the greater the risks they are prepared to take (i.e. driving faster). I guess this is one problem that will never go away, just don’t take unnecessary risks!

“Someone” sneaking off with the vin rouge!

Sunday night I put on my metaphorical chiefs hat and, with the help of an assistant, cooked up dinner for a few friends consisting of roast pork, roast potatoes, carrots & broccoli, followed by Carte D’or toblerone flavored ice cream (to die for!). Considering the lack of culinary resources (and wine glasses!) I’d say it went pretty well with the exception of the gravy which didn’t turn out quite right (but still tasted OK).

Ecotonoha

Check out this cool interactive visualisation designed by NEC which utilises some seriously slick flash:

Ecotonoha

“Ecotonoha is a project - to nurture a virtual tree collaboratively, and at the same time contribute to the actual environment to cope with global warming. As you make Ecotonaha’s leaves, the virtual tree will grow, and as Ecotonoha grows, real trees will be planted by NEC”

Annieisms, Is It? - Apparently video blogging is the future, is this the ultimate form of narcissism or actually pretty cool? I’d go with the latter, especially if there all as good as this! I would imagine though that one of these takes a fair amount longer to put together than your average blog post so whether it will catch on is another matter.

Anyone notice how since the Matrix Keanu Reeves seems to have been seriously type-casted? Now all he seems to play is pseudo-philosophical characters with issues (Constantine etc). I guess being Neo isn’t something you can really top, my advice would be to stop while you ahead! That said, his next film, ‘A Scanner Darkly‘ (2006) actually looks pretty good.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh

Had a good time in Edinburgh yesterday. Whilst the weather was a bit variable we got some nice spells of sunshine and it was pretty warm. Our trip had two main objective, get a European VISA from the German Consulate (for Echo) and to have a look round the old part of the city. The former went off without a hitch although there was an annoyingly long queue to actually file the appropriate papers.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh
Castle Cannon - kill the English!

We then moved off to have a look round the ancient Edinburgh Castle on the hill which was very nice but, at £9.80 to get in, a bit of a rip-off. Whilst we were there someone was having a wedding in the tiny chapel and of course some of the tourists went a *bit* mad, so much so, at one point I was sure they would have to call in security!

Edinburgh
The “Acropolis”

Edinburgh
Who’s this?!

After this we wandered up to Calton Hill which is at the other end of the “royal mile”. On the top of this is Edinburgh’s fake Athenian acropolis (built in 1822) which can seen for miles around. We spent about an hour wandering about up here - the views of the city and it’s surround (leading out to the sea) are spectacular.

Edinburgh

Next we wandered down Queen’s Street past some very impressive architecture (which makes up most of the city) and eventually to Princes Street Gardens before heading off for some food. Tired, but satisfied, we took the 7pm train back to Durham (arriving about 9pm).

Poverty Hypocrisy

Well my final exam (hopefully ever) is over and now I’m basically free until September when I start work. The exam, which was on Computer Graphics and Distributed Computing, went quite well considering how much I was dreading it. I’m planning quite a lot of things planned on the web front, which aside from being updated a lot more frequently, will also undergo a redesign sometime in the near future. I also hope to update the photo gallery which isn’t really very well integrated or organised.

Tomorrow I’m off for a day trip to Edinburgh which about two hours away from Durham. I’ve been meaning to go for a while but figured it was a sort of a now-or-never situation as I wont be living up north much longer. I’ve heard it’s very nice so hopefully I’ll have a few photos to post up sometime in the next couple of days.

Classic story I saw today - apparently the ‘Make Poverty History‘ wristbands that all the rich kids have been wearing as a fashion accessory recently are in fact produced in forced “slave labour” sweatshops in China. Whilst I’m sure this wasn’t intentional you can’t really emphasise the ironic nature of this revelation. Frankly I find it disgusting that people turn good intentions into simply a way of placating their guilt over the injustices which we, as the west, have brought about (be it directly or indirectly). I wonder what the reaction of someone in a country blighted by poverty would be to those wandering in clothes which cost more than they make in a year and a then to see a wristband proclaiming what it does? I think you already know the answer.
